West Island School

West Island School (Chinese: 西島中學, Abbreviated: WIS) is a co-educational, private, international secondary school in Hong Kong that provides to students from age eleven to eighteen an English medium education. The campus is a purpose-built development located at 250 Victoria Road, Pokfulam on the slopes of Mount Davis, Hong Kong Island. The school is reputed for its strong academic, matriculation and athletic record, providing students of all abilities with a "modern liberal education" based on British-influenced International curricula. Students from Years 7-9 study the West Island School Middle Years Diploma; students in Years 10-11 follow the IGCSE program; and students in Years 12-13 follow the IB Diploma curricula. The school is a member of the English Schools Foundation, and as such still receives a small but symbolic subvention from the Government that has been frozen since the 1997 Handover of Hong Kong.

History

West Island School began when the English Schools Foundation recognised a need for a new school on Hong Kong Island in the late-1980s; after Island School and South Island School. This was because of the recent residential boom in Discovery Bay, then which had no secondary school to cater for the growing need of secondary school education. After government approval of a site and funding in November 1990, plans for West Island School began in earnest, with the school operating as an offshoot of Island School at a temporary home; the old military hospital in Borrett Road, Mid-Levels.

Island School is a co-educational non-profit school located on Hong Kong Island, in Hong Kong. It is the founding school of the English Schools Foundation, and remains a member to this date. The school has been accredited by international organisations such as the Council of International Schools and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Originally located on 10 Borrett Road of the Hong Kong Mid-Levels district (the site of a former British military hospital), the school moved to its current and only campus on 20 Borrett Road in 1973. It currently houses around 1200 students across 33 nationalities and around 100 members of teaching staff.

Island School is a registered IB World School, and offers the IB diploma program along with an alternative BTEC program. Its students are academically successful, with a high graduation rate and results which are consistently above international averages. It also sports a vibrant community with a large range of student-led organisations and activities, allowing students to pursue responsibilities in a variety of aspects such as the environment, sports, international relations and providing student voice.

Island School is a private, co-educational, independent school (pre-kindergarten through high school) on the island of Kauai in Kauai County, Hawaii, United States. The school is located behind the University of Hawaii's Kauai Community College campus near the community of Lihue.

History

In January 1977, Island School began with 12 students ranging up to eighth grade. Within four years, enrollment was up to 68 and its high school had been established. But by 1983, Island School had graduated only eight students and the high school was disestablished. But in 1996, the high school was re-opened due to rising enrollment. Island School began graduating seniors again starting with the Class of 2000. Today, Island School is a fully accredited college preparatory institution. Graduates are accepted at such institutions as MIT, Yale, Wheaton, Babson, and Ithaca in the East; Oberlin, Denison, Purdue and Creighton in the Midwest; Stanford, University of Southern California, Pomona College, Reed, Gonzaga, Lewis and Clark, University of the Pacific, University of San Diego, Loyola Marymount University, University of Idaho, and the University of Nevada in the West; the University of Hawai`i, Hawai`i Pacific University and Chaminade in Hawai`i.

Coordinates: 45°27′N 73°45′W / 45.450°N 73.750°W / 45.450; -73.750 The West Island (in French, l'Ouest de l'île) is the unofficial name given to the cities, towns and boroughs at the western end of the Island of Montreal, in Quebec, Canada. It is generally considered to consist of the cities of Dorval, Pointe-Claire, Kirkland, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Beaconsfield, Baie-D'Urfé, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, the village of Senneville, and two boroughs of the city of Montreal: Pierrefonds-Roxboro and L'Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève. Furthermore, given the nature of suburban demographic development in Montréal, off-island suburbs towards the west of the island (such as Vaudreuil, Pincourt or Hudson) in addition to outer-ring boroughs of Montréal (such as LaSalle, Lachine and Saint-Laurent) are often considered part of the West Island. This is in large part due to similarities in personal income, design of the communities, services available (and shared), quality of life and economic engines supporting the population.

West Island (South Australia)

West Island is a 10 hectares (25 acres) granite island lying 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi) off the southern coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia, 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) south-west of the town of Victor Harbor. It rises to a maximum height of about 40 metres (130 ft) in the south-west. Its main conservation value lies its seabird colonies.

History

West Island was named for its location 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) west of the promontory of Rosetta Head. During the 1880s it was quarried for granite to construct the foundations of Parliament House, Adelaide. From 1913 until the mid-1960s it was zoned as a Reserve for Government Purposes and, for a short period, was used by the Adelaide University Regiment as a target for gunnery practice during field exercises. In 1966 it became a fauna reserve. Until about 1970 fishers took little penguins and rabbits to use as crayfish bait, though the population of rabbits on the island was exterminated by 1971 and it was declared a Conservation Park in 1972. In 1973 and 1975 Pearson Island rock-wallabies were introduced to the island.
